The Congress national president was having a siesta when the mob, taking out a rally to Parliament, attacked his residence on Jantar Mantar Road in New Delhi on November 7. The house was partly burnt. His cook, Ambi, was attacked with sticks and injured in the face. Kamaraj escaped to the adjoining Vithalbhai Hostel for MPs
